The way to Defragment the Harddisk

By : Mike Lackie

Some way to maintain your pc system healthy is to de-fragment its hard disk drive. It helps supercharge the proficiency of the computer. De-fragmenting is just a trouble-free thing to do.

Sooner than discussing the progression of de-fragmentation, let us figure out primarily with reference to fragmentation. It's the condition that occurs when the operating windows system breaks a file into parts. This may possibly be by reason of not ample capacity within the storage apparatus where the computer program was stored at first. For instance, you changed a pc program that was kept and it grew to become superior than its unique volume. Thus, it cannot be limited in its unique physical volume.

The working windows system then breaks the software into two or probably the most parts although shops these into additional storage areas. Mindlessly, the system saves a report of the regions the place the software program fragments are saved. The pc program system it uses is either NTFS or FAT (Pc program Allocation Table). These software techniques are similar to libraries that maintain numerous various information as well as documents. If the stored software program is considered necessary, the working system will ask the computer program system concerning the whereabouts of the fragmented program. The scanning method within the software program system plus the reuniting of the fragmented computer program components into its one authentic file is called defragmentation.

The method of defragmentation is from time to time time consuming. Although, it's commonly used because it is an straightforward phase to boost the procedure of the computer system. Thus, you call for to have ample time ahead of starting the progression. It may possibly last half-hour and even particular hours relying on the frequency of utilization of the pc from the last carried out defrag.

Here are the guidelines in defragmentation:

1. First, close the entire running computer programs, even all the time functioning software programs such as anti-virus utilities as well as screen savers. You may make use of the command Ctrl+Alt+Delete to check on any running application. Click on the functioning software and click "End Task" at the bottom to close it.

2. Click on and open the "Start" menu.

3. Browse through "Programs," then through "Accessories," to "System Tools," and finally, "Disk Defragmenter."

4. The Select Drive will appear. Click on "Settings."

5. Pick both "Check the drive for errors" and "Rearrange program files so my programs start faster."

6. Select that drive to defrag from the pull down menu and press "OK."

7. Highlight that drive you require to defrag by doing a left-click on the drive. Press "Analyze" to figure out if the hard drive needs defrag or not.

8. If it indicates that the drive needs defragging, click on "Defragment." Once pressed, the defrag operation starts and it can also take 30 minutes or more to see to the process. It depends on the disk size.

9. If the defrag utility can't defrag your selected disk and says there is an error, run the Scandisk utility. You possibly will complete this by clicking on the "Start" button, hovering over "Programs," then "Accessories," then "System Tools," and "Scandisk."

10. Close the utility once the defrag operation is completed.

11. It is advisable that you control the defrag code at least once a month.

12. Additionally, it is suggested that the you activate it after downloading or setting up new program.

At all times understand instructions ahead of starting to be safe.

What is a Disk Defragmenter?

Once files are made, erased, or altered, it is very certain that it will be fragmented (files are not kept in one area in its totality or in an immediate location). As the different components of the file are spread out all over the hard disk (in non-contiguous pieces) the performance and dependability of the hard drive heads will have to look for the different files in various locations which can be a slow process.

The Disk Defragmenter is an application developed by Microsoft and is included in Windows operating system. The design is actually a technique that speeds up the access on to files by rearranging those stored on a disk to occupy storage locations. This will optimize a computer program’s ability to read and write files to and from the disk by “minimizing head travel time and maximizing the transfer rate.” In Windows XP, the Disk Defragmenter improves the time to start up the system.

One can access the application by the following methods:

1. Start -> All Programs-> Accessories -> System Tools -> Disk Defragmenter

2. Start -> Run -> and type “dfrg.msc” in the Open line -> Ok

3. Start -> Administrative Tools -> Computer Management ->Expand Storage ->Disk Fragmenter

One and two will direct the user to a ‘standalone’ window that has the Disk Defragmenter application.

The third step will open the Microsoft Management Console and a display of the ‘Disk Defragmenter’ on a snap-in module.

Once the application opens, several hard drives will be exhibited. Select a drive, click on the ‘Analyze’ option. A window will open with a short recommendation of which activity to consider. If the recommendation is agreeable to the user, bring the mouse over and select the “Close” option, if the user feels that there should be defragmentation, choose the ‘Defragment’ option.

An ‘Analysis’ window may or may not commend defragmenting the drive. However, if the number on the ‘Average Fragments Per File’ result is 1.05 or more, the message will immediately recommend defragmenting the drive. Lower than that, the user has the option to defragment or not. Some recommend going ahead even if the result is below the 1.05 as this will eliminate any existing fragmented files which will reduce the number of times looking for the drive heads to turn up a file.

Once the process is complete, click on the ‘View Report’ which will show the defragmentation results. This will not affect the ‘Total Files and Average File Size’ but it will cut down to zero (0) the ‘Average Fragments Per File’ (1.00).

If the individual is just an ordinary XP user, this utility will keep the files maintain in top system operation. There are free trial software available which can be downloaded if the user wishes to test an upgrade version for free before buying.
